ETHNIC SKIN FACTS – E-BOOK

The purpose of developing this series of eBooks is to address a critical gap in esthetics education. Historically, skin of color was not adequately included in aesthetic curricula, leaving many licensed professionals seeking advanced knowledge and safe practices for treating diverse skin types. This resource outlines essential steps to mitigate risk factors and improve outcomes when working with clients of color.

Treatment modalities must always be customized to the client’s individual skin needs. The following steps serve as a framework for achieving safe and successful treatment results:

Client Intake and Consultation

  • All clients should complete a comprehensive intake form/client history form, which includes:
    • Medical history and current prescription medications
    • Use of medicinal herbs, alcohol intake, and tobacco use
    • Family medical history
    • Ancestral and ethnic background
  • Allocate adequate time for a thorough consultation.
  • Use open-ended questions to identify client goals (e.g., “Are you looking for a relaxing facial, or are you seeking to correct specific skin concerns?”).

Skin Analysis and Documentation

  • Conduct a detailed skin analysis to determine both skin type and skin condition.
  • Maintain weekly documentation of findings and progress for continuity of care.

Treatment Planning

  • Develop and record a treatment plan in the client’s file.
  • Recognize that treatment plans are dynamic; adjustments may be necessary at follow-up visits based on the skin’s response. The guiding principle is to provide the skin with what it needs at each stage.

Legal and Safety Documentation

  • Obtain signed and dated release forms before performing procedures (e.g., photographic releases, treatment consent forms, chemical peel, microdermabrasion, dermaplaning, microneedling, etc.).

Home Care Recommendations

  • Provide home care products tailored to the client’s specific skin concerns.
  • Always include sunscreen as part of a daily regimen to protect against UV-induced damage and prevent post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
